Evan H. Bellin

Oil on Canvas 70X50

Hegel wrote: "The life of Spirit is not the life that shrinks from death and keeps itself untouched by devastation, but rather the life that endures it and maintains itself in it.  It wins its truth only when, in utter dismemberment, it finds itself.  This tarrying with the negative is the magical power  that converts it into being."  An unnamed girl partisan was hung by her Nazi and Lithuanian captors in Minsk on October 26,1941.  Her anonymous dead body was left to hang in public as a negative message to other Resistance fighters.
Tarrying in the negative until 1977, she was finally named and could emerge from beneath the veil of her anonymity: Masha Bruskina.
