“Migrant Ephod (Vest)”, 2019

Israel ,US

Tamar Hirschl's Migrant Ephod (Vest) references the brightly colored life vests provided as aid in the migrant crisis. The shroud serves a dual function as a protective headscarf and personal flotation device. Emblazoned with images of refugees emerging from the ocean and floating in rafts at sea, it makes visible the human realities of the crisis,
creating an ironic contrast with the concealing function of the veil as a garment. The scarf promotes greater consciousness of the struggles faced by refugees and the concept of 'visual aid,' by which artists may bring attention to crises afflicting the world.
